About:
The Slidell Regional Police Academy is a component of the Training Division with the Slidell Police Department. The Academy was established in 1994 and has increased its role and scope of training each year since that date. The regional police academy is responsible for the training of the Slidell Police Department personnel as well as the training of approximately 24 different agencies. The training is 440 hours long for police officers, 230 hours long for corrections officers, and 360 hours long for reserve police officers.
During the academy training, cadets will experience several disciplines of training to include: firearms, defensive tactics, driving, and dynamic simulation training for use of force encounters plus experiential learning. In addition to the regular academy training, the Training Division also conducts four 40-hour in-service training periods per year for the department, four quarterly firearms training/certification classes which use a blend of handgun, rifle, and shotgun, as well as hosting training from other outside courses.
The Training Division also conducts specialty training as needed by the department, such as taser, tire deflation, tactical vehicle intervention, special response training, and training for the public in safety with the Refuse to be a Victim class and Citizen Academy.
The academy is located on National Guard grounds and is safely removed from public view while training. The academy staff consists of members who have extensive experience in law enforcement, SWAT, military special operations, police dive teams, narcotics, and martial arts. The academy is conducted in a para-military environment with a heavy emphasis on academia and is one of the most challenging academies in the state.
If you are up for the challenge, this may be the academy for you. Bring your running shoes...they will get a lot of use!
